Mme. Killam and I will have our learning packages up and ready to go by Tuesday next week. We look forward to working with you all,
Mme. Roach
Thank you for checking my website. As part of the province's continuity of learning plan, the school will be providing weekly learning packages through MicroSoft Teams (MS Teams) beginning 14 April. New packages will be added at the beginning of each week for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. A link to MS Teams can be found on the QMS Website under 'Student Resources'. Learning packages are aimed at providing students with opportunities to practice and maintain their academic skills and extend learning through independent work. To support these learning packages, teachers will be available through MS Teams to offer feedback to students as required.

Good morning,
As all of you, Mme Killam and I have been self-isolating since mid March and have little information to share with you until now. Understanding that you are all home with your families, and we are both home with our young children while are husbands still work, this home-learning will be a work in progress for everyone. We are checking in with you here to let you know that we're thinking about you and hope everyone is doing well and taking good care of themselves and their families. We are looking forward to working with our Grade 7 FI Team to help supply you with some academic support during this time. For now, here is the website for Anglophone School District with some suggested websites for you to continue to practice your math skills until more direction has been determined. Anglophone South School District's Website/Government of NB's Learning at Home Recommendations: https://www2.gnb.ca/content/gnb/en/departments/education/learning_at_home.html We will talk soon as we know more, we too only found out all of this information yesterday. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time, Mme. Roach and Mme. Killam Today students did 3 quiz questions in their weekly journal that focused on percentages, decimals, and fractions. Students should be very comfortable switching back and forth from each form. Below are some of the questions we did (1-3 were done alone in their journals) and the rest of the questions were done in partners. It was amazing to see how many possibilities the students came up with!
Mme. Roach We continued to work on Mental Math strategies and review today. See today's 10 question quiz posted below for students are were absent. We also reviewed calculating percentages of a number with our favourite Math-O game. Some of the Math-O numbers called are also posted below for practice for students who were absent. Students have a small quiz tomorrow on percentages before we move on to adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers next week.
Mme Killam Today students reviewed some of our Mental Math strategies that have been learned throughout grades 5,6, & 7. We have been noticing that more practice in this area will be very beneficial to all students! More specifically multiplication and division facts.
As our class wide activity today, students were given 1000$ to "shop" with. They were required to purchase a minimum of 7 objects (cut out from magazines) and add tax to their objects. They were responsible to keep a chat with each object's: Name, Original Price, Tax Amount, and Total. The goal was to get as close to 1000$ as possible without going over! We have only had two classes so far but we have one student purchase 14 items and calculate his total to be 999.8$ and another student was at 999.12$! This is a perfect activity for day to day life and also for mental math! Find 10% and then cut it in half to find the 5%. Together, this will make the 15% that you are looking for which is our tax amount here in NB! Have a great day and for those of you who aren't here. Make sure you are keeping an eye on this website and are connecting with your friends in your classes! Mme. Roach Today, we introduced our new mental math format. Every week, students will now start mental math day with a combination of 10 mental math questions. These will include a mix of the mental math strategies we have looked at this year, as well as mental math review questions that connect to curriculum outcomes we have covered already this year. This is a a great way to practice our mental math strategies, to become flexible with the strategies we are using, and to review old concepts.
Today, we also worked on converting percents into decimals and percents, and vice versa (see the picture below). We practiced these skills with a couple of sheets where we had to solve riddles using these skills. Students who did not finish at least the first sheet (Egypt) on converting fractions to percents need to do that for homework tonight. We are off to a good start with percents! Today we talked about how to find 50%, 25%, and 10% of a number. Students were incredibly aware of how to find half and half again. So they used the halving strategy for 50% and the double half strategy for 25%. There were a handful of students who already knew the trick to finding 10% of a number but not many. They were pleased to see how easy it was! We are now confident we can find all of the above PLUS 75% of a number, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%!
It was a good day for an introduction to percentages! Mme. Roach After completing our mental math quiz on the Double-Half strategy, students got to "choose their own adventure" today in preparation for tomorrow's unit quiz. Some students chose to work in a small group reviewing for the quiz with me, others tackled the challenge question (see picture below) with a partner, others created and exchanged practice quizzes with a friend (see below), and some chose to complete textbook review work. I appreciate how students intentionally chose the activity that they felt would best prepare them for tomorrow's quiz - a great demonstration of personal responsibility! Tomorrow is the unit quiz and next week we head into studying percentages! :)
Mme Killam Revision of add/subtracting fractions and our last lesson on adding/subtracting mixed numbers!2/18/2020 Mme Killam and I are so proud of the students and the concepts they have grasped over the past 3 weeks. We are finishing up with adding and subtracting mixed numbers and reviewing all of the topics we have covered since the beginning. Our unit quiz will be held on Friday and students should be comfortable will all of the following:
Factors Multiples Changing improper to mixed Mixed back to improper Reducing Fractions Adding Fractions with like and unlike denominators Subtracting Fractions with like and unlike denominators Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers Estimating Happy Tuesday! Mme Roach |
