Mme Roach
Students have now been able to see ALL of the divisibility rules and practice with some. There must be an understanding of factors and multiples in order to feel confident with these rules. I have asked all students to bring in any constructions paper they may have at home (minimum 3 pieces) for a math project that we will be starting on Friday. Tomorrow Mme Killam will be focusing on Mental Math and multiplication facts! See you all on Friday! Mme Roach

Today we had a great day in Math! We started to talk about our first "official" outcome of the 2019-2020 school year! Students were super creative in creating multiples of 2-3-4-5-6-8-9-10. With these chart sheet paper example we were able to dive into the divisibility rules for 2-5-10-3-9. Go ahead - quiz your child tonight! Give them a large number 4-6 digits and ask them! Is that number divisible by 2? 5? 10? 3? 9? They are going to be able to show you all the cool tricks they learned today! We will be looking at these more as well as the ones we didn't get to tomorrow. Sleep well my friends, Mme Roach Happy Monday! Today we reviewed some concepts from last year and really started to talk about Factors and Multiples. Here are some of the notes we took/discussed throughout the day. We also played an Illumination factor game that can be found here: https://www.nctm.org/Classroom-Resources/Illuminations/Interactives/Factor-Game/
It would be wise for many students to continue practice with this game as it was apparent that many do still need that extra review. We practiced choosing our own numbers and talking about how to create a list of factors and finding some multiples as well. This was a great "first" official math day and we can't wait to continue this week! Mme Roach I was absolutely blown away with my first PDCP class this year and coming up with some ground rules and community standards together! The class of 7 Wood was absolutely AMAZING and were open in sharing EXACTLY what they want this year to look like in their PDCP/Health class. Thank you so much to all the students for being so involved.
My homeroom: Please don't forget outstanding health forms, agendas to be signed, and student record forms! It is picture day on Monday as well as the Open House that starts at 6:30pm. Have a great weekend! Mme Roach We had a great day today, getting organized for Math class, and learning how Thursdays will work throughout the year (a mental math lesson/quiz and a mental math activity focused on our current outcome). We also enjoyed playing People Bingo to get to know each other better before we head into a year of working together in Math. I can tell already that this will be a great year! Please keep bringing in Hilroy notebooks and duotangs so that Math portfolios are ready to go for Monday.
Reminders: 1) Student information forms went home today and need to be verified, signed, and returned to the school ASAP. 2) School picture Day and our Open House (6:30-8:00) will take place on Monday, September 9. 3) Don't forget to read and sign pages 7-9 in the agenda and 4) to return all immunization forms (whether consent is given or not). Thank you! Mme Killam It was great to meet everyone today! We are looking forward to a great year in Math! Here are a few reminders:
For homework tonight, the following pages in the agenda must be signed and returned: pages 7, 8, & 9. For Math class, students need 2 Hilroy notebooks (one for Mental Math and one for Journal), 1 duotang for tests and quizzes, and 1 notebook of the students choice. Please also come to class with loose-leaf and a pencil. Picture Day will be Monday, September 9 and the QMS Open House will be that evening from 6:30-8:00. Immunization forms were sent home today. All forms must be returned signed regardless of whether you consent or are opting out. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email us! Sincerely, Mme Roach & Mme Killam Bonjour/Good day Cougar families!
Our names are Mme Roach and Mme Killam and we will be your grade 7 FI Math and PDCP teachers this year at QMS. Note from Mme Roach: I am originally from Bathurst, NB and have taught in the Anglophone North, East, and South Districts. I am very excited to be back in the classroom this year with all of you. My oldest son is 4 years old (just started pre-kindergarten this year) and my youngest little guy is turning 2 in October. They both are very, very busy but love to learn – just like their mom! Even though I have enjoyed my time with both of them this summer immensely, I am excited to dive back into the math classroom and to work with the Grade 7 students at QMS! I enjoy playing golf, playing and coaching volleyball, as well as anything that keeps me and my family active. Math is my passion and I can’t wait to embark on this journey through the grade 7 FI Math Curriculum with all of you! Note from Mme Killam: I am originally from Fredericton, NB, but have been living and teaching in the Saint John area for 15 years. I am happy to be settled in Quispamsis with my husband and young son. I have a background in Psychology with an MEd in Exceptional Learners. I have taught in the Anglophone South and Anglophone West school districts and have been a middle-level Math teacher my entire career. In addition to classroom teaching, I have been a Math Mentor & Coach for other teachers as well as a Resource & Methods teacher. I enjoy reading, singing, cooking and spending time with family. I am thrilled to be partnering with Mme Roach in Grade 7 Math at QMS this year! Our math class will be divided into many different learning outcomes and includes activities such as: mental math, journal writing, group work activities, problem solving, math focused vocabulary, formative and summative quizzes, and tests. Students and families can always stay connected through email and MOST IMPORTANTLY follow along on our website at: www.math7roach.weebly.com The website will highlight all of our activities, lessons from the day, and any important information that the student may have missed or misunderstood throughout the year. You will find our contact information on our website; the best way to get ahold of us quickly being through email or the website. Thank you so much for allowing us to participate in your child’s learning and we look forward to meeting all of you!
