Since I (Mme Roach) am still trying to find the cause of my eye ailment, I have been out on numerous occasions and am finally headed to a specialist this afternoon. It was a great day to get caught back up with students and to have one on one discussions about mode and moyenne. Together, we were able to tell if we were comfortable and confident with these two outcomes for the test on Friday, and were then able to move on to the next review sections. Tomorrow we will be hammering home medianne and l'etendue (range) and will be focusing a lot on word problems.
Reminder the test on Friday will be covering EVERYTHING we have learned since September: 1)Factors and multiples 2)Divisibility Rules 3) Mean, median, mode, l'etendue (range), and valeur abbarente (outlier) 4)Mental math questions Happy studying, Mme Roach Today was a day for review and practice for this Friday's test. The test will be on all concepts we have been working on since the beginning of September. These include: divisibility rules, mean, median, mode, range, and outliers. This week, students will have time to practice, work one-one-one with the teacher, and prepare to demonstrate their full understanding on the test this Friday.
Today, students completed three activity centres to review and practice divisibility rules and mean, median, and mode. Students were able to help their classmates with these concepts and I was able to work with several students in each class to clarify misunderstandings. As whole groups, we also looked at common errors with mean, median, and mode, and how to correct them. With some more practice, Mme Roach and I anticipate good things on next week's big quiz on both topics. Students should keep reviewing divisibility rules so that they do not have to continually refer to their divisibility rules booklets before next week's quiz. Every student handed in their duotang of work at the end of class and I will be providing individual feedback to them.
Mme Killam Students are closing in on a project that they have worked on and off on over the past two weeks. The project focused on mean, median, and mode and also range. Students are expected to hand this in after double checking completeness by the end of class on Friday. Today is Wednesday so we were able to complete our 5th Mental Math practice day - we know that mental math comes into play in our daily lives and ensure that this is something we are constantly working on. I can already see students are improving since week one - what more can we ask for?! Tomorrow Mme Killam will be in for activity stations focusing on review of divisibility rules and also mean and median *which were the two most difficult from our formative assessment last week*
Have a great Wednesday evening, Mme Roach Students completed a quiz on mean, median, and mode today. This means that we will be able to continue on with focus on range and outliers next week. We are currently working on a mini math project that will conclude next week as well. During PDCP today we are learning how to proceed this school year as a team and respecting our peers learning preferences. It was a great day - happy Thanksgiving weekend!
Mme Roach Today was a busy day of 4 rotating centres. Students reviewed divisibility rules by playing Divisibility War, they practiced multiplication facts by playing Block 4 (this is a great online version that can be played at home ; https://www.nctm.org/Classroom-Resources/Illuminations/Interactives/Product-Game/ ), they completed a good practice question on mean, median, and mode in the context of Hockey team, and they played Data Duel (pictured below). The periods were busy, but fun! We will revisit some of these activities next Thursday in preparation for Friday's quiz.
Several students still do not have a duotang for centres work and to organize quizzes. Please, please, please bring these in ASAP! We are half-way through Term 1 and want to be organized for home reports and parent-teacher interviews. Thank you, Mme Killam Every Wednesday we begin the day with Mental Math practice, and today was no different. Here is an example of questions students should be comfortable answering from their previous years of schooling. I have already determined that as a whole there will need to be a large focus on fractions and anything to do with them as many students are stuck when it comes to fraction conversation and conversion. The second picture shows us how hard Mme McLaughlin's class has been working on their data collection for a math project about chocolate chip cookies. This data is going to be used next week to focus on mean, median, mode, and range. There will be a small quiz tomorrow on those outcomes as well.
Have a great Wednesday, Mme Roach Over the past two days students have been doing a lot of work finding mean (average or moyenne in French), mode, and medianne. Yesterday (Monday) students learned about range (l'etendue) and found that this was a very easy concept to grasp when the numbers are in order! For the most part students have proven that they are very comfortable with these ideas and today we started a mini math project called "Le Bac a biscuits". Here are a few photos of the students rolling the dice to find the data that they need to find the solution to help the baker create her new "chocolate chip" cookies!
